Catechism Quote

Created in God's image and called to know and love him, the person who seeks God discovers certain ways of coming to know him. These are also called proofs for the existence of God, not in the sense of proofs in the natural sciences, but rather in the sense of "converging and convincing arguments", which allow us to attain certainty about the truth. - CCC 31

Fast for HaitiFinding Your Keys: Chris Faddis & “Fast For Haiti" - A podcast by Catholic Josh LeBlanc.  He discusses suffering, and offering it up with special guest Chris Faddis talking about his unique project, Fast For Haiti!

What if thousands of people decided to fast 1 to 3 meals and then donated $5, $10, or $15 to relief efforts to help the victims of the earthquake in Haiti? We could literally send thousands of dollars in aid to help those in need and we could do it in the matter of a few days. Join the effort and spread the word, get your entire youth group, your church choir, your parish, your co-workers, your young adult group, your campus ministry group, whoever you can to join this effort. Pick one day in the next week and fast for 1 to 3 meals that day - then donate $5, $10, or $15. www.fastforhaiti.com is an effort of Chris Faddis and www.livinggracefully.net - all proceeds are to be given directly to an aid organization such as Catholic Relief Services. John Paul II"We will go throughout the city, we will pass among the people assailed by thousands of everyday problems, we will go to meet these brothers and sisters of ours and we will show the Sacrament of Christ's presence to all:

'Behold the bread of angels, the bread of pilgrims; the true bread of children.'

In this bread the Almighty, the Eternal, the thrice Holy has made Himself close to us, has become 'God-With-Us,' Emmanuel." - Pope John Paul II

Fasting & Abstinence Regulations Print E-mail

Devotions

Ash Wednesday, February 17th and Good Friday, April 2nd are days of fast and abstinence. Fridays of Lent are also days of abstinence.

Fasting is to be observed by all 18 years of age through age 59. On a fast day one full meal is allowed. Two other meals, sufficient to maintain strength, may be taken according to each one’s needs, but together they should not equal another full meal. Eating between meals is not permitted but liquids, including milk and juices, are allowed.

Abstinence is observed by all 14 years of age and older. On days of abstinence not meat is allowed. Note that when health or ability to work would be seriously affected, the law does
not oblige. When in doubt concerning fast and abstinence, the parish priest should be consulted.

Fasting, almsgiving and prayer are the three disciplines of Lent. The faithful and catechumens should undertake these practices seriously in a spirit of penance and of preparation for baptism or of renewal of baptism at Easter.

Fr. Z’s 20 Tips For Making A Good Confession Print E-mail

With Lent quickly approaching on February 17th, it's time to examine our consciences and make a good confession.  While frequent confession is recommended for everybody, the Church requires that we make a confession of our sins at least once each year.

From the blog of Fr Z at What Does The Prayer Really Say

Fr. Z’s 20 Tips For Making A Good Confession   o{]:¬)

We should…

  1) ...examine our consciences regularly and thoroughly;
  2) ...wait our turn in line patiently;
  3) ...come at the time confessions are scheduled, not a few minutes before they are to end;
  4) ...speak distinctly but never so loudly that we might be overheard;
  5) ...state our sins clearly and briefly without rambling;
  6) ...confess all mortal sins in number and kind;
  7) ...listen carefully to the advice the priest gives;
  8) ...confess our own sins and not someone else’s;
  9) ...carefully listen to and remember the penance and be sure to understand it;
10) ...use a regular formula for confession so that it is familiar and comfortable;
11) ...never be afraid to say something "embarrassing"... just say it;
12) ...never worry that the priest thinks we are jerks…. he is usually impressed by our courage;
13) ...never fear that the priest will not keep our confession secret… he is bound by the Seal;
14) ...never confess "tendencies" or "struggles"... just sins;
15) ...never leave the confessional before the priest has finished giving absolution;
16) ...memorize an Act of Contrition;
17) ...answer the priest’s questions briefly if he asks for a clarification;
18) ...ask questions if we can’t understand what he means when he tells us something;
19) ...keep in mind that sometimes priests can have bad days just like we do;
20) ...remember that priests must go to confession too … they know what we are going through.

St. Joseph

St Joseph
Behold, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream, saying, "Joseph, son of David, do not fear to take Mary your wife, for that which is conceived in her is of the Holy Spirit; 21 she will bear a son, and you shall call his name Jesus, for he will save his people from their sins."
Matthew 1:20b-21 RSV

Oh, St. Joseph, whose protection is so great, so strong, so prompt before the throne of God, I place in you all my interest and desires. Oh, St. Joseph, do assist me by your powerful intercession, and obtain for me from your divine Son all spiritual blessings, through Jesus Christ, our Lord. So that, having engaged here below your heavenly power, I may offer my thanksgiving and homage to the most loving of Fathers. Oh, St. Joseph, I never weary contemplating you, and Jesus asleep in your arms; I dare not approach while He reposes near your heart. Press Him close in my name and kiss His fine head for me and ask Him to return the Kiss when I draw my dying breath.

St. Joseph, Patron of departing souls - Pray for me.
