WASHINGTON, D.C., Nov. 20, 2009—Today a group of prominent Christian clergy, ministry leaders and scholars released the Manhattan Declaration, which addresses the sanctity of life, traditional marriage and religious liberty.  The 4,700-word declaration issues a clarion call to Christians to adhere to their convictions and informs civil authorities that the signers will not—under any circumstance—abandon their Christian consciences.  Drafted by Dr. Robert George, Dr. Timothy George and Chuck Colson and signed by more than 150 Orthodox, Catholic and evangelical Christian leaders, the Manhattan Declaration was made public at a noon ET press conference held in the Lisagor Room at the National Press Club.

The Manhattan Declaration

A Call of Christian Conscience

Christians, when they have lived up to the highest ideals of their faith, have defended the weak and vulnerable and worked tirelessly to protect and strengthen vital institutions of civil society, beginning with the family.

We are Orthodox, Catholic, and evangelical Christians who have united at this hour to reaffirm fundamental truths about justice and the common good, and to call upon our fellow citizens, believers and non-believers alike, to join us in defending them. These truths are:
  1. the sanctity of human life
  2. the dignity of marriage as the conjugal union of husband and wife
  3. the rights of conscience and religious liberty.
Inasmuch as these truths are foundational to human dignity and the well-being of society, they are inviolable and non-negotiable. Because they are increasingly under assault from powerful forces in our culture, we are compelled today to speak out forcefully in their defense, and to commit ourselves to honoring them fully no matter what pressures are brought upon us and our institutions to abandon or compromise them. We make this commitment not as partisans of any political group but as followers of Jesus Christ, the crucified and risen Lord, who is the Way, the Truth, and the Life.

Congress is working on health care reform but unless abortion funding is explicitly excluded, this bill could mean the biggest expansion of abortion in decades. Please call your Representative and Senators at 202-224-3121 and tell them that you do not want the health care reform bill to fund abortions. For more information online, visit  www.priestforlife.org/legislation.

Just 22 days after conception a human embryo’s heart begins beating. The little heart will beat nearly 54 million times before he or she is born!

By 6 weeks plus 2 days after conception the brain waves of an unborn child can be recorded by EEG (electroencephalogram).

At just 10 weeks after conception nails and fingerprints begin to emerge in patterns that will uniquely identify a child throughout his or her entire life.

At 9 weeks after conception unborn children begin thumb-sucking. Between 12 and 16 weeks they often touch their mouths, up to 50 times an hour. Teeth start to grow by 13 weeks. Beginning at 14 weeks developmental differences between boys and girls begin to appear: female fetuses move their mouths much more frequently than males.

From the blog And Sometimes Tea.

It has been ten years since photographer Michael Clancy, then pro-choice, took some pictures during a fetal surgery that changed his mind about abortion. And that famous picture is still changing minds and hearts about abortion--something the little boy in the original picture is very happy about:

"When I see that picture, the first thing I think of is how special and lucky I am to have God use me that way," Samuel told FOXNews.com. "I feel very thankful that I was in that picture."

Family Life - Respect Life

The presence of life two women will share
One will welcome it as a gift
The other, a burden to bear
One child will live to laugh and cry
One child, sadly, conceived to die
God surrounds them both
With an unfailing love
Watching them closely
From the heavens above
Two different women
Following two separate roads
One not realizing the pain she will hold
But with God’s forgiveness
She too will find peace
The guilt and remorse to finally release

February is dedicated to

The Holy Family

Joseph got up, took the child and his mother by night, and departed to Egypt, and remained there until the death of Herod. This was to fulfill what the Lord had spoken by the prophet, “Out of Egypt have I called my son.”
Matthew 2:13-15 RSV-SCE

O most loving Jesus, Who by Thy surpassing virtues and the example of Thy home life didst hallow the household in which Thou didst choose to live while on earth, mercifully look down upon this family, whose members, humbly prostrate before Thee, implore Thy protection. Remember that we are Thine, bound and consecrated to Thee by a special devotion. Protect us in Thy mercy, deliver us from danger, help us in our necessities, and impart to us strength to persevere always in the imitation of Thy Holy Family, so that, by serving Thee and loving Thee faithfully during this mortal life, we may at length give Thee eternal praise in heaven.

O Mary, dearest Mother, we implore thy assistance, knowing that thy divine Son will hearken to thy petition.

And do thou, most glorious patriarch, St. Joseph, help us with thy powerful patronage, and place our petitions in Mary's hands, that she may offer them to Jesus Christ.  Amen.
