Catechism Quote

"The task of giving an authentic interpretation of the Word of God, whether in its written form or in the form of Tradition, has been entrusted to the living teaching office of the Church alone. Its authority in this matter is exercised in the name of Jesus Christ." This means that the task of interpretation has been entrusted to the bishops in communion with the successor of Peter, the Bishop of Rome.

"Yet this Magisterium is not superior to the Word of God, but is its servant. It teaches only what has been handed on to it. At the divine command and with the help of the Holy Spirit, it listens to this devotedly, guards it with dedication and expounds it faithfully. All that it proposes for belief as being divinely revealed is drawn from this single deposit of faith."

Mindful of Christ's words to his apostles: "He who hears you, hears me", the faithful receive with docility the teachings and directives that their pastors give them in different forms. - CCC 85-87

News - From The Bishop
Written by Alexis Walkenstein, Director of Communications

Celibacy is a great gift and blessing for the priest, for the Church and for society. It affords the priest a unique opportunity for a greater ability to serve all of God's people as well as for an intimate and mystical union with Christ Himself. The basis for priestly celibacy is the imitation of Christ who lived His mission in complete union with His Father and gave His life in love for all.

Priestly celibacy is not a function. It is a way of life in conformity to the life of Christ. Celibacy is of the same nature as marriage. Just as a husband and wife give themselves exclusively to each other for their family, the priest gives himself exclusively to Christ for the service of Christ’s family, the Church. Both ways of giving bring joy.

A particular priest's human failing in regard to living his fidelity to celibacy should not call into question the joyful gift of celibacy anymore than a particular person’s infidelity to his or her spouse should call into question the joyful gift of marriage.
