Living as a steward of Providence - In a recent 7 Steps small group, we were discussing how applying Catholic principles to finances helps us reach two important goals in life: growing in love of the Lord, and achieving Godly financial objectives. One of the participants noted how important the word applying was. He said it's easy to dream about goals, talk about them, and even write them down. But, he noted, those aren't the same as doing them. What did the Blessed Mother say to the stewards at the wedding feast at Cana? "Do whatever he tells you" (Jn. 2:5). True financial freedom results from consistently following a few principles that lead to success with finances and success with life. It starts by fulfilling our God-given role as a steward of Providence. While money plays a part in all of our lives, life's about a lot more than money. The most important step you can make to become truly financially free is to grow in your relationship with the Lord. Why? As you learn to better imitate Christ, your priorities will change, including the way you view your finances. You'll desire to have a Godly financial plan and follow through on that plan. Take a moment to consider your walk with Christ. Are you moving forward? Backward? Side-ways? Frequent reception of the Eucharist, daily prayer and spiritual reading, and the sacrament of reconciliation are all effective ways to deepen our union with the Lord and guide us to being a more effective steward of Providence. God loves you! Faith and Finances © – Visit VeritasFinancialMinistries.com for tools that can help you bring unity to managing money in your marriage. Consider joining Holy Name's "7 Steps to Becoming Financially Free" SMALL group-study. For information on the upcoming session or to sign up, come to our Orientation Meeting on Thursday, February 11 at 6:30pm in the Church Annex or simply call Debbie & Angelo Panozzo at 471-4191. |

With Lent quickly approaching on February 17th, it's time to examine our consciences and make a good confession. While frequent confession is recommended for everybody, the Church requires that we make a confession of our sins at least once each year. From the blog of Fr Z at What Does The Prayer Really Say Fr. Z’s 20 Tips For Making A Good Confession o{]:¬)
We should…
1) ...examine our consciences regularly and thoroughly;
2) ...wait our turn in line patiently;
3) ...come at the time confessions are scheduled, not a few minutes before they are to end;
4) ...speak distinctly but never so loudly that we might be overheard;
5) ...state our sins clearly and briefly without rambling;
6) ...confess all mortal sins in number and kind;
7) ...listen carefully to the advice the priest gives;
8) ...confess our own sins and not someone else’s;
9) ...carefully listen to and remember the penance and be sure to understand it;
10) ...use a regular formula for confession so that it is familiar and comfortable;
11) ...never be afraid to say something "embarrassing"... just say it;
12) ...never worry that the priest thinks we are jerks…. he is usually impressed by our courage;
13) ...never fear that the priest will not keep our confession secret… he is bound by the Seal;
14) ...never confess "tendencies" or "struggles"... just sins;
15) ...never leave the confessional before the priest has finished giving absolution;
16) ...memorize an Act of Contrition;
17) ...answer the priest’s questions briefly if he asks for a clarification;
18) ...ask questions if we can’t understand what he means when he tells us something;
19) ...keep in mind that sometimes priests can have bad days just like we do;
20) ...remember that priests must go to confession too … they know what we are going through. |

AWAY FROM CHURCH BUT MISSING IT?...
Does that describe anyone you know? Maybe they walked away because of mistreatment or an argument. Maybe divorce was involved. God doesn't give up on people, but sometimes it feels hard to come back to His church. Holy Name's Re-membering team makes it easy to think about the possibilities. Send your friend to the School Media Center Monday evening, Feb. 1 at 7:30. Or come and bring your friend with you. It's a three-week program, but there is no commitment beyond the first night. No pressure, no preaching, just honest talk -- and information that may surprise some people. For information contact Tom at 686-7098. |

WASHINGTON, D.C., Nov. 20, 2009—Today a group of
prominent Christian clergy, ministry leaders and scholars released the
Manhattan Declaration, which addresses the sanctity of life,
traditional marriage and religious liberty. The 4,700-word declaration
issues a clarion call to Christians to adhere to their convictions and
informs civil authorities that the signers will not—under any
circumstance—abandon their Christian consciences. Drafted by Dr.
Robert George, Dr. Timothy George and Chuck Colson and signed by more
than 150 Orthodox, Catholic and evangelical Christian leaders, the
Manhattan Declaration was made public at a noon ET press conference
held in the Lisagor Room at the National Press Club.
A Call of Christian Conscience
Christians, when they have lived up to the highest ideals of their
faith, have defended the weak and vulnerable and worked tirelessly to
protect and strengthen vital institutions of civil society, beginning
with the family. We
are Orthodox, Catholic, and evangelical Christians who have united at
this hour to reaffirm fundamental truths about justice and the common
good, and to call upon our fellow citizens, believers and non-believers
alike, to join us in defending them. These truths are: - the sanctity of human life
- the dignity of marriage as the conjugal union of husband and wife
- the rights of conscience and religious liberty.
Inasmuch as these truths are foundational to human dignity and
the well-being of society, they are inviolable and non-negotiable.
Because they are increasingly under assault from powerful forces in our
culture, we are compelled today to speak out forcefully in their
defense, and to commit ourselves to honoring them fully no matter what
pressures are brought upon us and our institutions to abandon or
compromise them. We make this commitment not as partisans of any
political group but as followers of Jesus Christ, the crucified and
risen Lord, who is the Way, the Truth, and the Life.

A very big thank you to our generous donor who donated the $16,740.00 for our new Carillion Bell system that rings in the bell tower. The company has stopped making and servicing the old analog system and has switched to a new digital system. This new system is also more user friendly and operates via a remote. The donor wishes to remain anonymous, and has donated the system in honor of his deceased father who always loved hearing the church bells. Again, a big thank you from our parish. |

In much the same way dating websites bring potentially compatible couples together, VocationMatch.com allows an inquirer to create a profile, which is matched against the profiles of hundreds of participating religious communities. Inquirers can click to have their profiles sent to any of their matches. Or they can use the descriptive listings, videos, and links featured in their results to learn more about matching communities and possibly begin a conversation with them. THE IMPORTANCE OF THE CRUCIFIX
Catholics are often
asked why we have crucifixes and not just the plain cross? A crucifix is a cross
which has the crucified body (the corpus) of Christ. The answer comes from
Scripture:
"But we
preach Christ crucified: unto the Jews indeed a stumbling block, and unto the
Gentiles foolishness: But unto them that are called...Christ, the power of God
and the wisdom of God." ( I Corinthians 1:23-24)
The presence of
Christ's body on the cross does not mean that we ignore the Resurrection.
Instead, it is a reminder to us that the bonds of sin were broken by Christ's
suffering and death (1 Peter 2:24).
The crucifix
is a sign of Christ's unconditional love for us, a reminder of the hope
we have for a life united to Him, and an outward expression of our Faith as
Catholic Christians.
For
these reasons, the Catholic Church encourages the faithful to place crucifixes
and other sacramentals in their churches, institutions, and homes. A sacramental
is an object such as a crucifix, rosary, statue, or artwork which helps us grow
in our faith and open our hearts to God's graces. (Catechism of the Catholic
Church 1677) |

From Catholic News Agency:
After years in the making, the English translation of the new Roman
Missal is nearing its completion and is now awaiting the final approval
of the bishops and the Vatican. In an effort to begin educating the
faithful and clergy on the new translation, the U.S. bishops have
launched a website.
The new website,
which was launched on August 21, includes background material on the
process of the development of liturgical texts, sample texts from the
Missal, a glossary of terms and answers to frequently asked questions.
A press release from the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB)
says that content will be added to the website on a regular basis over
the next several months.
Bishop Arthur Serratelli, who chairs the bishops' Committee on
Divine Worship, welcomes the faithful to the new site in a video,
saying, "In the years since Vatican II we have learned a lot about the
use of the vernacular in the liturgy and the new texts reflect this new
understanding." |

February is dedicated to The Holy Family
Joseph got up, took the child and his mother by night, and departed to Egypt, and remained there until the death of Herod.
This was to fulfill what the Lord had spoken by the
prophet, “Out of Egypt have I called my son.”
Matthew 2:13-15 RSV-SCE O most loving Jesus, Who by Thy surpassing virtues and the example
of Thy home life didst hallow the household in which Thou didst choose
to live while on earth, mercifully look down upon this family, whose
members, humbly prostrate before Thee, implore Thy protection. Remember
that we are Thine, bound and consecrated to Thee by a special devotion.
Protect us in Thy mercy, deliver us from danger, help us in our
necessities, and impart to us strength to persevere always in the
imitation of Thy Holy Family, so that, by serving Thee and loving Thee
faithfully during this mortal life, we may at length give Thee eternal
praise in heaven.
O Mary, dearest Mother, we implore thy assistance, knowing that thy divine Son will hearken to thy petition.
And do thou, most glorious patriarch, St. Joseph, help us with thy
powerful patronage, and place our petitions in Mary's hands, that she
may offer them to Jesus Christ. Amen. |
